2020 was a year when distance was needed, but technology brought people together. The games appeared as a tool to interact with friends outside of tiring videoconferences, as an additional reason to chat.
For this reason, online games deserve a special mention in 2020. It was in this year that many people who were not very interested in video games ended up giving a chance for some multiplayer titles.
- The best online games of 2019
The time has come to celebrate the 10 best and most relevant online games of 2020, responsible for offering hours of fun and unity. Let’s go to them:
This was a pretty unfair title this year. Spellbreak is a free battle royale developed by Proteriat, with all the basic mechanics that the genre requires. That is, you fall on a map alone or in a trio and must survive until there are no more opponents.
However, this game deserves prominence for the diversity of gameplay. There are no conventional weapons here like in Fortnite or PUBG. The player finds bracelets with fire, ice, air, stone spells, among others, and needs to combine different elements to eliminate enemies.
Spealbreak is quite vertical, and there for the final confrontations, players jump so high that the battle practically takes place in the air. The game was released on September 3, free of charge, for PC, Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X | S, with crossplay among them all.
Valorant is Riot’s endeavor in the world of first-person shooter games. The game is inspired by Overwatch, not only with players exchanging shots with each other, but with special skills that also offer advantages and disadvantages.

8. Ghost of Tsushima – Legends
A lot of people can twist their noses at Ghost of Tsushima in an online multiplayer list. The game was released as a single player title, but received a free update that added Legends mode, which brings the co-op to the table.
Here, players in groups of up to four people create their samurai, with different classes and skills, and together they need to eliminate hordes of enemies, protecting the game’s villages.
- Reviews | Ghost of Tsushima ends PlayStation 4 era with brilliant narrative
There is also a new story mode to play with, but with a much more humble plot than that of the single player campaign.
Ghost of Tsushima was released in June 2020, with Legends mode coming in November. The game is a PlayStation 4 exclusive.
7. Genshin Impact
Genshin Impact was one of the surprises of 2020. Developed by the Chinese company Mihoyo, the free game has an open world inspired by The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, with different ways to interact with the map.
It offers a cooperative multiplayer, but it requires an initial advance to be unlocked. United, players can do some side missions and wander the world in search of items and battles.

Genshin Impact was released on September 28, free of charge, for PC, PlayStation 4, Android, iOS and Nintendo Switch.
6. Destiny 2 – Beyond Light
The Destiny franchise has its ups and downs. Last year, Bungie, the game’s developer, split from Activision and promised a super-update for the game.
This content is Beyond Light, which basically brings a new beginning to the game’s plot. Here the player experiences the events and consequences of the Traveler’s return after Cayde-6’s death. Destiny 2 can basically be played entirely in cooperative mode, in addition to having competitive disputes between players.
In fact, anyone who wants to try the mechanics of Destiny 2 can download the base version for free. Beyond Light content was released on November 10 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X | S, Xbox One and PC.
5. Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is Nintendo’s biggest hit in 2020. The game basically puts you in the shoes of the mayor of a small island, having to manage resources and organize the place.
In the midst of a year of social isolation, Animal Crossing appeared as a form of interaction, allowing players to virtually visit the island of friends. Every game item trading mechanism has created a new form of savings within the game.
The title is a Nintendo Switch exclusive and was released on March 20, 2020.
4. Crusader Kings 3
The multiplayer strategy game sets the player in the Middle Ages, where only one thing mattered to the great kings: passing on their dynasty. The player can conflict with others on the map, but also use diplomacy to build rapport and strengthen their empire.
The game gained prominence this year, positioning itself as one of the most played on Steam. Crusader Kings 3 was developed by Paradox and released on September 1, 2020 for PCs.
This online multiplayer is aimed at those who like horror. In it, four investigators of supernatural activities enter a house or environment haunted by ghosts. The group’s objective is to raise enough information to identify which ghost is haunting the place, without the members being killed in the process.

1. Among Us
A more critical person can point out: Among Us is not a game from 2020. However, it not only won the popular taste this year, but it was the most popular title mainly among those not used to games.
The main point here is simplicity. Among Us offers a virtual version of the game known as “Detective”, “The city sleeps” or “Werewolf”, depending on your region. All are names for a game in which one or more people in a group are imposters trying not to be discovered.
- Among Us | How to explain the success two years after the launch?
The game exploded in lives on Twitch, being played by campaigning politicians here and in the United States. Also, by requiring the exchange of information between players, it was responsible for a boom in Discord users.
Because of this success all year, Among Us is at the top of the best online games of 2020.
