PS5 Pro may have performance equivalent to the Radeon RX 7800 XT

New rumors about the PlayStation 5 Pro have recently emerged, highlighting the console’s possible configurations. The main highlight is the huge performance gain, which could be equivalent to that of the Radeon RX 7800 XT graphics card — while the normal PS5 has similar performance to the Radeon RX 6700.

There are several sources citing rumors about the performance and specifications of the PlayStation 5 Pro. One of them mentions that the supposed new Sony console will have RDNA 3 architecture instead of RDNA 2, which will be the main aspect for improving performance.

On the ResetEra forum, user “RandomlyRandom67” was the one who stirred up the entire community with a batch of 12 new rumors, including:

  • Viola chipset will be produced by TSMC with N4P technology;
  • GFX1115;
  • Viola CPU will have Zen 2 architecture like the PS5, but with a frequency of up to 4.4GHz, 64 KB of L1 Cache, 512 KB of L2 Cache and 8 MB of L3 Cache;
  • Viola die will have 30 WGP (workgroup processor), however the PS5 Pro version will only have 28 WGP activated, totaling 56 CUs (compute units);
  • The codename Trinity is because it brings together three technologies: fast storage, accelerated ray tracing and upscaling;
  • The architecture will still be RDNA 3, but it will have the ray tracing improvements present in RDNA 4. BVH (bounding volume hierarchy) will be using dedicated hardware instead of just shaders. This will reduce information and execution discrepancies;
  • 3584 shaders, 224 TMUs e 96 ROPs;
  • 16GB of GDDR6 at 18 Gbps. 256-bit memory bus with 576 GB/s memory bandwidth;
  • The frequency they are looking for from the GPU is 2.0 GHz, with a peak performance of 28.67 TFLOPs or 14.33 TFLOPs if we disregard the dual-issue factor;
  • 50-60% rasterization improvement over Oberon and Oberon Plus. Ray tracing performance will be more than doubled;
  • The XDNA2 NPU will have Sony’s exclusive learning technique for upscaling. This will be one of the main focuses of the PS5 Pro, just as frame rendering was on the PS4 Pro;
  • Announcement scheduled for 2024.

All these rumors come together with information from other people, who say that the PS5 Pro will have 60 of the 64 CUs (more than the other rumor that says 56 CUs). This is a small difference, indicating a good window of the settings “expected” by the community between 56 and 60 CUs.

Finally, insider Tom Henderson revealed that he was unable to obtain any data to confirm the leaks, but highlighted that Sony itself expects information to begin leaking at the end of the year. It is during this period that the company will begin distributing the first dev kits, which will increase access to console settings and reduce Sony’s control of access to information.
