Legion GO is launched and increases competition between portable consoles

This Tuesday (31), Lenovo officially launched the Lenovo Legion GO, equipped with an AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme chip. In addition to the APU with RDNA3 graphics, the Legion GO features resolutions of up to 1600p (QuadHD 16:10) and detachable controls, driving the growing portable console market.

The Legion GO’s screen is 8.8 inches with a 16:10 aspect ratio, and has a 144Hz refresh rate. This allows the notebook to deliver much sharper images, with greater pixel density, and fluid than the Asus ROG Ally, mainly a competitor. Another highlight of the Legion GO screen is the coverage range of up to 97% of the color spectrum.

Shaping the future of laptops

Naturally, the concept of detachable controls is not entirely original, considering that this is the main attraction of the Switch. However, unlike the Nintendo console, the Legion GO is designed not as a local multiplayer platform with two controllers, but as a portable PC with greater ergonomics and freedom.

Legion Strike controls are designed to act as a single gamepad, with complementary functions, but offering greater comfort. The control on the right side also has an optical sensor on the bottom and a magnetic docking base, which can be used as a mouse with trigger or stick in FPS or simulation style games.

Just like the ROG Ally, the Legion GO will be available in two versions, one with the Z1 Extreme chip and the other with the more modest Z1. The top-of-the-line APU features 8 Zen4 cores and frequencies of up to 5.1 GHz, and RDNA3 graphics with 12 computing units.

The simplest model only has 6 Zen4 cores and 4 RDNA3 UCs. Although it is still good hardware, the basic Z1 chip should not be enough to use QuadHD resolutions and 144Hz refresh rates.

For now, only the top-of-the-line model has been launched, costing US$699 and US$749, in versions with 512GB and 1TB of storage, both NVMe PCIe4 SSD. FreeGameGuide tested the Legion GO during BGS 2023 and had confirmation from Lenovo that the console will arrive in Brazil in January.
