Intel Core i5 13600K Review |  The complete intermediate chip

At the end of September last year, Intel announced the first processors of its new generation of desktop chips. We’re talking about the 13th generation of Intel Core CPUs, codenamed Raptor Lake. Among them is the Core-i5 13600K, an intermediate chip with great performance for all kinds of tasks, from games to professional activities.

I used the Core-i5 13600K for a few days, running tests with synthetic benchmarks as well as some games. I took the opportunity to make a comparison between it and the recently launched AMD Ryzen 5 7600, which is one of its competitors.

To test the i5 13600K, I used the motherboard sent by Intel together with the parts we have available at FreeGameGuide.

Tests with benchmarking software

Benchmarking software is a great way to determine the performance of pieces of hardware. They can simulate real applications or measure the performance of a processor with respect to a specific function.

We use the 3DMark suite apps a lot, like Fire Strike, Fire Strike Extreme, Time Spy and CPU Profile. Unfortunately, I couldn’t run PCMark 10 with the i5 13600K. There may have been some incompatibility between the program, the Intel platform and Windows 11.

The purpose of the comparison between the i5 13600K and the Ryzen 5 7600 is to determine which is the best mid-range processor for those looking for multitasking or gaming performance.

Cinebench R23

Based on Cinema 4D, Cinebench tests the processor for multi-core as well as single-core performance.


Blender uses all of the chip’s processing power to render three scenes.


V-Ray is yet another image rendering test that uses all CPU cores.

CPU Profile

The CPU Profile measures processor performance in terms of the number of threads in use. In this way, we can observe the scaling of performance regarding the use of threads. This allows the creation of software optimized for certain hardware.


7-Zip measures the chip’s performance in file compression and decompression tasks.

Fire Strike

Benchmark for DirectX 11 based games running in Full HD. While the Ryzen 5 7600 did 75.35 FPS, the i5 13600K did 73.63 FPS.

Fire Strike Extreme

Benchmark for DirectX 11 based games at 1440p resolution. In this test, the Ryzen 5 7600 setup generated 61.86 FPS, and the Intel setup generated 62.77 FPS.

Time Spy

Benchmark for games based on DirectX 12, in Full HD resolution. Here, the Ryzen 5 7600 did 32.60 FPS, while the i5 13600K did 52.44 FPS.

temperature and consumption

In terms of temperature and consumption, there are big differences between the Ryzen 5 7600 and the Core-i5 13600K. Although Intel’s chip is considered intermediate, it has 20 threads, which together increase the CPU’s processing power in multitasking, as well as its consumption.

Having only 12 threads and 65W TDP, the Ryzen 5 7600 is much cooler and more economical than the Core-i5 13600K. AMD’s chip was tested using its cooler box, which is quite simple. The Intel processor was tested with a 360 mm water cooler. Stressing both processors with Cinebench R23, the Ryzen 5 7600 peaked at 90.2 W, while the i5 13600K peaked at 234.3 W.

As I made clear throughout the text, the Ryzen 5 7600 emerges as the best competitor for the Core i5 13600K, if we consider the performance of both chips in games.

Users looking for high performance in games and don’t want to spend a lot on a top-of-the-line processor can choose one of these alternatives, between Intel’s platform and AMD’s. AMD’s chip costs less and comes with a cooler in the box that is efficient for the CPU’s demands. Its negative point is that it is much inferior to the i5 13600K in multitasking, due to having six threads less.

Is it worth buying the Intel Core-i5 13600K?

The Core-i5 13600K is a mid-range processor with incredible performance, whether in games or productivity. Equipped with 20 threads, the chip manages to deliver optimized performance in games, and, at the same time, please those who need to create content quickly.

In addition, the processor uses the LGA 1700 socket, released in the previous generation. Therefore, users of 12th generation Intel chips do not need to change motherboards. This platform should support Raptor Lake Refresh chips, which will possibly be released in 2023. Another good news is that it works with DDR4 memories, which are cheaper than DDR5 memories.

If you prefer to build an AMD gamer setup, the Ryzen 5 7600 beats the i5 13600K in games, but loses in multitasking. This processor comes with an efficient cooler box, but only supports DDR5 memories. And since the AM5 platform is new, you will have to buy a new motherboard.
