Since before it was officially revealed, GTA 6 One of the strongest rumors was already her return to Vice City and the idea of a female protagonist. Both were confirmed in the game’s first trailer, but what many trumpeted as the first time a woman would be the main character in a Grand Theft Auto It’s not quite true, as this already happened in the beginning of the series — although not everyone remembers that.
The confusion is understandable, as we didn’t really have any female protagonists in the 3D era of the franchise, when it became the phenomenon we know today. In GTA 3released in 2001 for PlayStation 2, until the current GTA 5, all games starred men. Claude, Tommy Vercetti, CJ, Niko Bellic, Michael de Santa, Franklin Clinton and Trevor Phillips became the faces of Rockstar’s lucrative series. But if you go a little further back in time, you find a slightly different reality.
In the first game of the series, called simply Grand Theft Auto, it was possible to choose one of several characters to steal cars and carry out robberies. Released for PC and PlayStation in 1997, the game featured four female characters named Divine, Mikki, Katie and Ulrika.
As this debut game had the simplest graphics and an aerial view of the characters, it was not possible to distinguish exactly who was a man and who was a woman, just as none of them had a worked story, much less voice acting.
In the sequel, released in 1999, these characters were removed, but the Game Boy Color version brought two new girls for the player to choose from, called Candy and Gretchen. As in the first game, they had practically no differences between themselves or the male characters, but they were there. They were just player avatars.
Taking all this into consideration, Lucia must be the first well-developed protagonist of the franchise, with a story to be worked on throughout the entire plot of GTA 6. Although Rockstar has said very little about her, we know that the new protagonist spent time in jail and that she has a Bonnie and Clyde-like relationship with Jason, the game’s other playable character. For this reason, unlike her predecessors, she is someone who already presents herself as someone with much more presence, personality and depth — which is enough to consider her a historical figure within the saga.
At the same time, the quartet from the first game and the duo from the portable sequel also have their share of importance and have already left their names in the history of GTA since its inception.
GTA 6 It is scheduled to be released in 2025, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X. The PC must be left out at first.
