Baldur’s Gate 3 was chosen Game of the Year by the Brazil Game Awards, the main national award for the games industry, beating names like Alan Wake 2 e The Legend of Zelda: Tears of The Kingdom, also mentioned as possible favorites. The choice was made based on votes from the jury, made up of media outlets and video game critics from across the country and of which the FreeGameGuide is part.

Larian Studios’ RPG was the game that won the most at BGA 2023, with three achievements. In addition to being chosen Game of the Year, the game also won in the Best RPG and Best Multiplayer categories, not to mention the Best Studio trophy. Forza Motorsport is the new Zelda come right after, with two trophies each.

And although they are awards made by different entities and with their own categories aimed at the domestic market, the Brazil Game Awards 2023 can be seen as a good thermometer for The Game Awards, the main event in the field in the world and whose edition this year takes place at next December 7th.

This is because the nominees in the general categories are basically the same, such as Game of the Year, Best Action and Adventure Game and Best Multiplayer. Furthermore, part of the BGA jury is also part of the TGA voters, which reinforces the idea that some results should be repeated in the global awards.

National highlights

But the big difference of the Brazil Game Awards is the highlight it gives to Brazilian games and players. And, in 2023, the Brazilian Game of the Year award went to Pocket Braverydeveloped and released by Statera Studio and Pqube.

The title had already caught the attention of many people after being nominated for the TGA in the Best Fighting Game category alongside classic franchises such as Street Fighter e Mortal Kombat. Taking into account that the purpose of the national game is to be a celebration of the fighting game scene in the country, the simple fact that it achieved this international recognition already makes it worthy of the BGA trophy.

Another national highlight, although a little more controversial, was the victory of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 as best dubbing. This is because the PlayStation 5 exclusive divided opinions from the public and critics thanks to the decision to keep the characters’ names in English, which causes a lot of strangeness in the scenes. Still, that didn’t stop the game from taking the trophy at BGA 2023.

The awards also recognized LOUD as the best eSport team in Brazil, as well as Julia “Jelly” Iris, from LOUD Female, as the best female athlete. Gabriel “Fallen” Toledo, from FURIA, was chosen as the best male athlete.
