Over the years, several of these dolls came to life and appeared to terrify us on movie screens. This is what happens in Saw, for example, which although it has a plot more focused on gore, does not let the figure of Billy go unnoticed, a doll with a poorly finished appearance that uses a tricycle to move around. He is guided by Jigsaw, the feared predator who puts his victims in extreme situations.

In addition to him, other feature films conquered the public using macabre dolls, and the time has come to remember them. Check out our list below.

6- Chucky: Child’s Play

It’s impossible to talk about killer dolls without mentioning Chucky, isn’t it? The macabre toy won the cinema screens in 1989, by the hands of director Tom Holland and screenwriter Don Mancini.

In the story, Chucky harbors the spirit of a serial killer who was killed in a shootout with the police. His intention is to stay in the doll until he can transfer his soul to a human body.

When such a doll is given as a gift to a boy, he starts chasing his victims and starts killing. The little boy even tries to warn everyone of the danger, but neither his mother nor the police detective believe him.

After the success of the first film, the saga continued with Chucky 2, Chucky 3, The Bride of Chucky, The Son of Chucky, The Curse of Chucky and The Cult of Chucky. In 2021, the doll won a series to call his own, which premiered on Star+.

If you want to watch Chucky’s first feature, you can now press play on Apple TV.

5- Annabelle

One of the most famous macabre dolls in cinema is certainly Annabelle, who appears in the Conjuring saga, and who won three films with her name. Possessed by an evil spirit, it causes harm to those who possess it.

In the movies, the doll appears with an even more bizarre appearance and is made of a material that vaguely resembles porcelain, but in real life it is completely produced with cloth and is in the Occult Museum of the Warrens, in the town of Monroe, Connecticut.

Its origin dates back to 1968, when a nurse received the doll as a gift from her mother. She shared an apartment with a friend, and shortly after arriving home with the doll, she noticed strange behavior in the toy.

The two young women then decided to have a seance to understand what was happening and the medium who held it claimed that the doll was inhabited by a child named Annabelle.

From then on, bizarre things continued to happen and the story hit the screens in 2014, in an eponymous film directed by John R. Leonetti. The film was so successful that it won part 2 and part 3.

You can watch the first feature on Apple TV, HBO Max, Google Play and Microsoft.

4- Deadly Screams

One of the best killer puppet movies is certainly Dead Scream, which presents us with not just one, but several puppets at once. In the plot, we meet Jamie (Ryan Kwanten) and Lisa Ashen (Laura Regan), a couple who move to the city of Ravens Fair to start a new life. What they didn’t know, however, is that the place was cursed.

When Lisa dies, Jamie returns to Raven to investigate the case. From then on, he discovers an ancient legend about a ventriloquist named Mary Shaw, accused of killing a child.

Without having her guilt confirmed, Mary was chased by everyone in the city and had her tongue torn out before being killed. After being murdered, she was buried with all her dolls.

Times later, residents of the region began to die mysteriously, also having their tongues ripped out. At the same time that this happened, Mary’s dolls disappeared from her grave.

Merging murder, evil spirits, ventriloquist dummies and revenge, director James Wan managed to build a horror that no one can defect. You can watch it on Prime Video.

3- Evil Doll

Launched in 2016, Boneco do Mal or The Boy, as it is known in English, delivers a scary story, starring a murderous toy. In the plot, we meet Greta (Lauren Cohan), a young woman who accepts to work as a nanny in the house of a couple who live in a small English village.

Arriving at the place, she discovers that, in fact, she will have to take care of a doll, which the couple treats as if it were a real child, as a way of overcoming the death of their son that occurred 20 years ago.

Despite finding the situation strange, Greta remains at her job, but when she breaks a rule on the list stipulated by the doll’s “parents”, her life is turned upside down and plunges into a true nightmare.

Directed by William Brent Bell, the film features Lauren Cohan, Rupert Evans and Ben Robson in the cast, and can be watched on Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play, HBO Max and Netflix.

2- Cursed Doll

Despite not being unanimous and having received a significant number of negative reviews, Boneca Maldita is also an option for those who like plots with killer toys.

The story accompanies a family that begins to deal with problems caused by a toy manufactured by the patriarch. The children soon notice a strange movement in a doll named Sabrina and think it is a good idea to invoke the spirit of the deceased mother. From then on, strange things start to happen and they are disturbed by bizarre happenings.

The Indonesian terror is directed by Rocky Soraya, and features Luna Maya, Christian Sugiono, Sara Wijayanto and Jeremy Thomas. You can watch it on Netflix.

1- M3GAN

Moving away from toys possessed by spirits and moving towards a more futuristic plot, in M3GAN we meet a doll that is a kind of humanoid robot. She was designed by Gemma (Allison Williams), a roboticist who finds herself responsible for caring for her orphaned niece, Cady.

Not having much of a connection with the girl, Gemma presents her with the doll, so they can spend time together and so that Gemma doesn’t have to take care of the girl. It turns out that over time, the toy gains more autonomy and starts killing all those who approach Cady.

Merging horror and social criticism, M3GAN hit theaters in 2023, winning over a large part of the audience and specialized critics. At the time of writing this article, the film was only available in theaters. Secure your entry at ticket.com.
